EVENT IN PROFILE
Opening Night of Les Miserables
We interviewed Francesca Peskops, Creative Director at Event Emporium about creating the ultimate opening night party for one greatest musical productions – Les Miserables.
Q. What was the initial brief from the client and how was this executed through your creative process?
Our client, Michael Cassel Group and Sir Cameron Mackintosh, wanted no less than the ultimate celebration, a finale that would take an incredible night at the theatre to the next level. It was also important to engage Sydney’s media and the general public to create excitement around the season and boost box office sales. It was so much more than just a party!
Q. What was the inspiration behind the choice of Sydney Town Hall as the venue for the Les Miserables after party.
Built in the late Romantic Era, Sydney Town Hall had just the right historic significance, scale and grandeur for the theme: Modern French Revolution.
Q. How did you work with the caterers to ensure that the menu design reflected the overall event?
Our team worked with the caterers to produce a Parisian inspired menu of 7700 canapes, served with 4000 glasses of Mumm Champagne. Popular morsels included a traditional quiche, as well as more surprising offerings such as a dessert with popping candy, as the tribute to the guns of the rebellion.
Q. What made you engage with Decorative Events & Exhibitions to execute the décor and custom build elements for the event?
We knew DE&E would embrace our vision with passion and attention to detail having worked together on highly successful theatre launches before. Team DE&E integrated seamlessly with ours, developing impressive ideas that met our key goals for the event. A fast set-up and bump out was required so it was important to have trust.
Q. Why is entertainment such a big component of special events and how did your choice of entertainment enhance this overall event?
Event entertainment has evolved to be more than just a great band or feature act; we always ensure all elements of a project deliver one clear design, and entertainment is key to enhancing the event’s ‘story’. Our guests were enchanted when the children from Les Miserables took to the stage, and the DJ took a modernised approach to the theme, creating a celebratory atmosphere.
Q. What was your favourite section of the event?
We were thrilled with our recreation of the famous barricade, built using hundreds of props (including some from the original 1988 production). We used blow fans and smoke to create movement, so that this statement piece seemed to breathe with life.
Q. What was some of the major feedback/favoured elements from guests?
The event drew praise from industry and the media, already receiving a nomination from the Daily Telegraph for party of the year.
